Vibrant colours, Sunshine and Flax Flowers – How I Won An Amazing Stay at an AMAZING Getaway

Vibrant colours, Sunshine and Flax Flowers – How I Won An Amazing Stay at an AMAZING Getaway

As Kiwi and authentic as my Harakeke based flax flowers – that’s how I would describe the the Sun Lover Retreat in Tairua, where I had the good fortune to spend two amazing nights recently.

Background Story: I entered a floral art competition in August 2016 – a flax art centrepiece that I had made for the Northern Districts Cricket Association in vibrant pink, burgundy and yellow. The colours were pretty out there. It looked awesome.

The prize for the competition was a two night stay in a Luxury Bed & Breakfast in Tairua. I really didn’t expect to win – the competition was pretty stiff – some of the florists submitted stunning work. To be honest, I was absolutely thrilled and just a little stunned when I found out that mine was the winning entry.

As the months travelled by and 2016 became 2017, I had all but forgotten about my prize. It has been a full on year making changes to my products, a new focus for my business – and of course my darling two children, of whom I am super proud.

Finally the time came to step away from the flax flower workshop and do-the-weekend. We booked the dates and travelled to Tairua – not for a moment expecting to be overwhelmed by what we found there.

As you all know, I am a lover of things from the heart. This little Luxury B&B is one such treasure.

From the wonderful, generous, superbly hospitable hosts to the fabulous location and of course the food – the entire offer is spot on and, frankly, was food for the soul – and definitely what this soul needed! From the home cooked breakfasts to the private outdoor bath (let’s not even mention the wine sipping that took place in that bath). Our entire stay was relaxing and totally inspiring.

Donna and Chris chatted with us about their wee town – we now see Tairua in a whole new light, with so much to offer visitors to the area. There are local walks, awesome restaurants – we even found a beautiful beach that we had entirely to ourselves!

Donna is the most amazing person, and turns out she is a marriage celebrant - which obviously could be convenient in such a romantic spot.

So, when you head to the Sun Lover Retreat (and I recommend you do), please admire the flax art that Donna has commissioned me to do for them – and ask about the magnificent front door (it’s a good story, and please be sure to let Donna & Chris know that I sent you!
