Wharariki Flax Bouquet

“Wharariki” is the Te Reo (Maori) name for “Mountain Flax”, a species of flax found throughout New Zealand on cliffs and mountain slopes.

Wharariki flowers are greenish, with tones of orange or yellow (as opposed to the red of harakeke).

Wharariki is also the name of a beach in the Nelson region at the top of New Zealand’s South Island. It is the site of a beautiful and iconic inshore rock formation called the Archway Islands, featured frequently in photos in New Zealand landscape calendars.

Artiflax’s Flax Artist Sema has created this vibrant hand-tied flax bouquet out of the species of flax she uses in her work (harakeke) as a tribute to the wharariki flax plant.

It consists of flax flowers in bright greens and warm oranges, which are wrapped with lime green fabric and orange abaca and finished off with a beautiful green satin ribbon.
